Default Paint question

Hi
Anyone who knows if it will have anything to say if its used acryl ( i think that is what they use today) carpaint on drums, instead of Polyurethane paint. I have a black GLX Pearl kit. If they had to use polyurethane paint it will cost me a lot more.
Thanks.

I'm a little confused. Is this what a bodyshop told you? Urethane is usually a single stage paint, meaning...spray it, bake it, its ready to go. Acrylic is usually a two stage paint, meaning base color, then clearcoat. Base/clears are always more expensive. Not really in material cost (they are about the same), but in labor. I always use base/clear because its a little more durable, but with straight black, like yours either way will work. I'm almost finished a set in Lilac pearl with heavy glitter thats base/clear. I plan on posting a step by step as soon as I'm finished.

I used acrylic base with polyurethane clear on my '72 kit also...

WOW that purple kit looks awesome! Nice job!
What the bodyshop told me was that they dont have the polyurethane paint. So they have to get it just for me. Thats why it will cost me more.
If i get this right, it doesnt matter what type of paint ( acrylic or polyurethane) that i use on the GLX drums??
Thanks.

Thanks guys! Yea I sprayed these. I manage a paint shop for a living and I paint at home for extra cash(have to support my drum buying habit). I've been painting for 21 years and have painted everything under the sun!

So it will not have anything to say on how the drums sound, if acrylic is used? Compared to polyurethane.

Wow ruaslo that's something else. That lilac color and the colored flakes in there is really neat looking. Looks like your doing a helluva job. Can't wait to see those with hardware on them and all set up. What kind of shells are those?

DLX: To answer your question.... No, the paint type on the outside of the shell should make no difference unless there are changes to the drum that occur.

I would recommend you get a base/clear two stage paint job done. It costs more, but lasts longer.

Thank you Gord.
But what do you mean with changes that occur?

I'm not as familiar with Urethane paints, but I know some paints require special conditions to dry/cure properly, as well as absorbtion being different etc.

I imagine that ruaslo would be a better source for that info.
