I've been thinking of outfitting my Lugwig Acrolite with some Yamaha Wood Hoops. I love rim shots and i have played a wood hooped snare (Akira Jimbo Sig) and i absolutly loved the sound with the wood hoops, the rimshots felt very nice and soft.
My main question is, how durable are they, and whats the upgrade rate for them?

Have a look at Stellar Hoops you can get them custom made I plan on getting a set myself with the Birdseye outer ply.
I don't have any feedback on the durability of wood hoops so I will also be watching http://www.stellardrum.com |

They'll hold up well for the most part.
Key factors include rotating the hoop every so often, so you avoid causing consistent wear to one section alone. And maybe even more important, try your best to avoid rimshots above the tension rod holes. That's the weakest part of the hoop, so too much contact there can lead to splintering of the hoop very quickly. I've had the wood hoops on my Maple FF for just about 2 years, and they've held up very well for the most part. I got a bit lazy in the last few months and wasn't being as careful to maintain them in the ways I mentioned above, so they've suffered a bit more damage lately due to my negligence. Haha. But they're still very playable, and look fine for the most part. It was just kind of an eye opener that I need to take care of them, or they won't last nearly as long. Great investment though. The sound and feel is sooooo worth it, even if it does become necessary to replace the batter hoop every few years. I HIGHLY recommend them.

I have wood hoops on my snare, and they sound incredible. As for durability, I bought the snare used, and the hoop was already starting to splinter. It's still got some life in it, and I've had it for about 6 months now, and it hasn't changed that much, but I'd say you at least have a year or two of durability in a new wood hoop, just from personal experience. The sound is worth the replacement costs, though.

Also you have to think, the only hoop you should have an issue with durability is the top snare hoop, so even if you have to replace it every 2 years, thats really not bad.
The rest of the hoops shouldn't have TOO many rim shots, i mean sometimes people do rim shots on toms, but usually its not very often.

Alas, mine are not the Yammies.
I believe mine are the same generic models that DrumMaker sells. I do enjoy them, and for the price, they're definitely acceptable. But I've had the privilege of playing on a couple Yamaha kits and snares outfitted with their hoops... and although they're pretty expensive, they are noticeably higher in quality, in my opinion. I've considered replacing the batter side with a Yamaha hoop eventually, but that won't be for awhile, as mine still has plenty of life left in it.
