It does not look like I am going to find the kind of deal that some of you have gotten on an Acro. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to be patient (at least beyond another week or so). So what is the most you would consider spending on an Acro? Are the (newer) black galaxy acrolites as good as the vintage ones?

Also, it seems like most people are pushing for the Acro. Is there anybody else that would argue for the Sensitone brass (14x6.5) or New Classic Maple (14x5.5)?
Check out E-Bay right now.....there is at least one that you could snag for under $100. I just scored one for $80 the other day and am (im)patiently waiting for it to come by UPS. I have played an Acro before, and what everyone is saying is spot-on.

On another note, I also have a Sensitone Elite Brass (5", not 6.5") and I gotta say that for the price that is a very underappreciated snare. It's not a Black Beauty, but it sure does the job and is a pleasure to tune.

The last day or two, Acros have been going for around $140-150 including shipping.

So would most people say that the acrolite is a better snare than (or as good as) the gretsch new classic or Sensitone? Or just that the acrolite gives you more for your money? It looks like many of you are definitely suggesting the first option.

I'm actually now leaning toward the Senstitone Brass (14x6.5) (although I could still switch back to the New Classic in the next week--have to make my decision by the 12th). The cheapest acro I have seen on ebay has been for $110 with shipping, but it looks like others have had success at finding better deals. So I think I am going to continue to keep my eye out on ebay and craigslist, thinking if I find one in good shape for less than $75, then I'll get it as a secondary snare. From what I have heard from a couple others, I think the acro might be a little dry and quiet for my primary snare.

110 with shipping is still a good deal. I got my 70's Acro shipped at around 130 - 140. I would still go for it.
Oh and the Acro is not quiet especially rim shots.

150 max, and it has to be in great condition. I can't vouch for the sensitone, but the New Classic Maple snare is one of the best ply Maple snares made. I don't know what kind snare you have, but if you already have a wood snare, get the Acrolite. After that, get a block snare.

I do not already have a wood snare. I previously just had the snare from my Pearl Vision set. But I recently upgraded that to a Gretsch New Classic kit (that did not include a snare), so I am upgrading my snare as well and only plan to have one snare drum for the foreseeable future.

Umm, only one snare, eh? Get a block snare, preferably made from Padauk. Seriously, block snares are amazingly versatile. PM me if you are interested.

It obviously depends also on what kind of music you play..While the Acro is clearly more versatile, it is also more boring (the Acrolitians are going to stone me). For rock music there's nothing like a brass shell imo, and it doesn't have to be a Black Beauty. There are plenty of BB clones w/ Worldmax shells out there for $ 200-300 (PDP, Pork Pie etc.). I have not played the Sensitone Brass, but I've rarely been diappointed w/ Pearl snare drums.(I'm not knocking the Acro, I just prefer brass for rock!)

Block snares tend to be a bit out of my price range (trying to stay under $300)

I'd say my band's music is rock, but definitely not hard rock.

Put an Evans Power Center Reverse on, and you're good to go!
