ive just got some mics and stands etc, and the next step is to buy an interface. im gonna need atleast 6 pres and a couple other inputs. i would rather go usb 2 so i can use my laptop my my side when recording drum covers and just mucking around. other wise i can just use my desktop. i also would prefer getting bundled software with it.
I've been looking at the tascam US 1641 and the presonus firestudio. both come with cubase le 4. any thoughts on those? Thanks

I have the Tascam, and I think its pretty darn good for the money. Only thing I don't like about it is that the XLR connections are on the front, but the new US-2000 fixes that issue.
You could also look at the M-Audio fast track 8r. Fairly similar specs but its compatible with ProTools.

I always advise against usb recording. I would think for what you want you can't really go wrong with either. The other option is to save up some money and get an interface that is better.

If your laptop has expresscard/pcmcia expansion slot, you can put a firewire card in it.

I would typically agree with the firewire interface over usb, but recently I picked up the M-audio Fast Track Ultra to give me a few more options than my Firewire 410. It has worked flawlessly since I got it, and I've used all 6 analong ins simultaneously without a hiccup.
I actually had far more issues getting a stable setup with the firewire 410, even with an expresscard to get the interface and HD on different busses. I would consider the M-audio Fast Track Ultra 8R, which is usb 2.0 and has 8 mic pres. J |

In all reality there is no reason that USB 2.0 would not work, however on account of the packet collision handling going to the CPU, it is more processor intensive than Firewire (which handles the collision's itself). It makes a difference in speed, but depending on the data flow/interface design, it can be more (or less) noticeable.
